Member of the Finno-Ugric language group,
spoken principally in Hungary but also in
parts of Czechoslovakia, Romania, and
Yugoslavia. Hungarian is known as Magyar
among its speakers. It is written in a form
of the Roman alphabet in which s corresponds
to English sh, and sz to s. Like the Turks,
the Magyars originated in NE Asia; the term
`Hungarian' appears to derive from the
Turkish on ogur (`ten arrows'), describing
their ten tribes, which may also be the
origin of the English `ogre'.
